Mississippi Garden Lovelies

You have to fight the heat to keep anything growing here in southern Mississippi.
It is possible, you just have to water, water, water.  The results are worth it.

"They" say to opt for one squash plant per household member.  There are two of us and one squash plant in the garden, and alas, we still have too much squash.  Lots will be going in the freezer for the winter, which is a-ok with us.

The same is our zucchini situation.  We have an overabundance.  How about this zucchini....Does it look like a beer bottle to you?

Here's a little corner of ivy and rosemary.

I'm rooting a little basil (and creeping jenny) in a jar inside.

I've also started drying some basil for this year since I use it so often in cooking and want tons to last me through winter (click here to see three different ways to preserve basil!).

The little vertical garden I posted about here is coming along nicely.

And of course, I planted lots of zinnias.  I love my white ones particularly.

Anything lovely growing in your backyard this summer?

Review and Giveaway with Madison at Main!

Are you looking for new rugs to brighten up your home as we head into summer?  Madison at Main has rugs for every area of your home and has a wide selection of indoor, outdoor, accent, shag, pet, oversized, area, decorative, contemporary, and traditional rugs.  Their rugs are high quality and come in a huge variety of designs, colors, and styles.

I love this blue crab rug.  Wouldn't this be perfect for a beach house entrance?

How about this green onion rug for your kitchen?

Madison at Main's accent rugs are fade-resistant and machine-washable.  These rugs are so durable that they can withstand use in even your home's busiest areas.

French country, anyone?

They also have great bathroom rug styles.

For this review, I chose a Jellybean rug--"Cozy Window."  Of course I'd choose a cat rug.  Of course!

Madison at Main carries a great selection of Jellybean rugs--they "wash better than your jeans."

The colors of this rug are so unbelievably vibrant.  I can't say how much they pop in my kitchen.  Also, the quality of this rug up close is extremely high.  You can see in the close-up how well the looping is done and how thick the thread of the rug is.

Coy didn't see too terribly thrilled, but I have yet to see a dog get excited over a rug, so we'll move on.

Our cats go far out of their way to avoid stepping on several of our rugs (for no reasons I can discover), so the fact that Amos chose right away not to avoid coming into contact with this one signals to me that it's a winner.

A very pretty addition to our kitchen.

The nice folks at Madison at Main have offered to give one Till Death Do Us Part reader their very own accent rug.

Review and Giveaway with Chico Bags!

**GIVEAWAY CLOSED**

Between snack bags and grocery bags and lunch bags, have you ever stopped to think how many bags you throw away in a single day?  Frightening, to say the least.

Meet ChicoBag, a leader in reusable bags and multipurpose totes.  Chico Bag was founded by Andy Keller after an eye-opening trip to a landfill in 2004.  Much of the landfill was covered in the white and tan plastic bags just like the ones we all use once and toss into our garbage cans every day. ChicoBag strives to end the epidemic of using a plastic bag once before discarding it.  The very first ChicoBag was sold on Earth Day in 2005 at a farmer's market in Chico, California.

ChicoBag Company is helping people everywhere take the first step towards eliminating waste by taking one simple step--choosing stylish, resusable bags and totes over single-use, discardable bags!   Think how much space and waste could be saved by using totes and resuable bags instead of plastic!

Here is the original ChicoBag in boysenberry...

One of my favorite products in their extensive line is the Snack Time rePETe, which is a resuable snack and sandwich bag made of 78% recycled material.  This is sooo much better than mowing through box after box of plastic sandwich baggies!  I know I've been guilty of this.

ChicoBag also makes great messenger bags, duffel bags, and produce bags (no more one-use plastic produce bags!).
For this review, I received the Chico Vita Comtemporary Bag in slate stripe.

The Vita bag is 19'' x 12.5'' in size and has shoulder-length straps.  It also has an amazing forty-pound carrying capacity.  That's a lot of groceries! It is machine-washable in cold water and should be hung to dry.  When not in use, the entire bag folds into a small integraded pouch for easy storage.  The pouch (about the size of a dollar bill) can be stashed in your pouch or glove box or clipped onto your purse.  No more single use bags!

I love this bag for several reasons.  Not only is it so unbelievably stylish, but it's also unbelievably multipurpose.  It can go to the grocery store or farmer's market with you, and I'm also thinking it would make a fantastic beach bag.  It would fit tons of towels and kids toys, and you could just rinse the sand right off.  Not only that, but it would make a great overnight bag--perfect for a change of clothes and toiletries!

It's definitely time for us to start thinking in terms of reuse when it comes to grocery shopping, our daily routines, leisure, and travel.  It's better for our environment and our wallets!

The wonderful people at ChicoBag have offered to give one Till Death Do Us Part reader their very own ChicoBag, a Vita Contemporary Bag in Leaf Chain.

See how nice and tidy (and small like an apple!) the bag folds up?

Favorite Things

Sometimes, even early in the week, we grow weary from work and chores.
At the end of the day, I like to distract myself with thoughts of my favorite things.

Like homemade blueberry muffins on Sunday mornings.

The first zinnias of spring.

Colorful liners for cupcakes with friends.

Spode Woodland dishes on my table.

Creeping Jenny on my little patio.

What are some of your favorite things?

Have You Entered To Win a Cat Tail Spoon?

Have you entered to win the Cat Tail spoon from Jonathan's Spoons?  Click here!

Candles, Candles, Candles

There are certain things that chicks just love.  Among these things are dessert, jewelry, and candles.  It's just universal.  Though I'm certainly not the girliest of the girly, I'm no exception in any of these areas, particularly when it comes to candles.  They add such warmth and character to any space.  I'm such a huge fan of natural light.  I love turning off overhead lights and pulling out a few lovely candles.

Did you know I have cats?  I have one particularly active one named Amos.  As I set myself up for a particularly perfect night, I finished tidying the house, dimmed the lights, lit a candle, and jumped into bed.  Amos crossed the floor, jumped onto the dressed, knocked over the candle, and ended my peaceful night.  Red wax splattered five feet across the floor and ruined a white rug.  Yes.  Red wax on a white rug.

That wasn't, unfortunately, the first time Amos and I had a negative wax experience.  It was quite similar to the rug experience.  It also invovled a ruined "perfect" night, only with waxy sheets instead of a waxy rug.

Plainly put, cats and traditional candles are not the best combination.  It may just be time for this cat mama to make the switch away from traditional wax candles.  Several pros come to mind:  safety for pets and children (and adults!), no waxy mess, longer candle life, and the "flames" are wind-resistant.   Remembering to blow the candles out is also a safety concern.  However, you never have to remember to extinguish your candles with a flameless candle with timer.   How convenient would it be to be able to go to sleep with the candles lit?  Very soothing!  I also really like the idea of LED Tea lights.  The shallow shape of tea lights makes them especially dangerous for pets, so I never get to use them.  The LED version, however, is totally safe!  Traditional tea lights also burn out in a single use, making them expensive to replace continually.  LED tealights, however, last much longer.  Battery-powered candles also have censors that make them flicker like real flames!
So now I'm thinking....what could battery-powered candles have rescued my sweet kitty and I from?  Waxy sheets?  Permanent red stains on a white rug?

I think it's time to give them a try!
